The Collaborative Research Center will bring together Rice University and the research and educational institutions of Texas Medical Center, among others, by providing research environments and scientific resources that support interdisciplinary investigation. Here Rice’s leading research in the biological sciences, engineering, computation, and physical and mathematical sciences can join the biomedical research by TMC institutions in an effective combination of medicine, science, engineering and education. The building, opening early 2009, will include ground-level retail, dining, conference spaces and a landscaped public plaza. The second level will have classrooms, space with scientific equipment to be shared by the center’s researchers and a cafe to give them a place to meet and talk informally. Laboratories will occupy the top eight stories connected by a cylindrical hub, the nexus of social and intellectual interaction.
